Australian Building and Construction Commission Bill: Passed

The Building and Construction Industry (Improving Productivity) Bill 2013, which was reintroduced to Parliament 31 August 2016, passed the Senate yesterday. The Bill re-establishes the construction industry watchdog (Australian Building and Construction Commission (ABCC)). A late concession made by the government to secure crossbencher support has resulted in the Building and Construction Industry (Fair and Lawful Building Sites) Code 2014 (the Building Code) not being applied retrospectively. This means the Building Code will only apply to Enterprise Agreements made after the Building Code is issued, with all existing Enterprise Agreements protected until 29 November 2018.
