NECA would like your feedback for our submission on apprenticeships and traineeships

The NSW Government has announced a review of the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act 2001.  The Act regulates the employment and training of apprentices and trainees in NSW.

To this end, a consultation paper has been released, which canvasses issues organised around the following key themes:

  • Flexibility of training provisions (including Vocational Training Orders) and alternative models for delivery of apprenticeships and traineeships;

  • Nature of the training contract – its classifications, establishment and cancellation;

  • Clarity of roles and responsibilities of parties to training contracts and training plans;

  • Methods for recognising completion of “on the job” training;

  • Handling of disputes, complaints, appeals, and application of sanctions;

  • Adequacy of current arrangements for recognition of trade skills obtained overseas; and

  • Appropriateness of the current Regulations.

The review thus provides a valuable opportunity for NECA to provide feedback to the government on training arrangements in NSW and propose alternative ways of delivering apprenticeship and traineeship training.

NECA will be making a submission in response to the consultation paper; this is due by 19th September 2016.

The consultation paper includes several lists of specific questions. Members who are interested in providing feedback on apprenticeships are encouraged to consider the questions and contribute a response to issues that you believe should be addressed to better support our industry.

To this end, in order to make it easier for members to provide us with feedback, we have developed this template which includes all the questions posed by the review.

It would be very much appreciated if members could fill out this template with your feedback and email it to Adam Spivakovsky, Policy Adviser on email: adam.spivakovsky@neca.asn.au

We will provide further updates to members as NECA’s submission takes place.
