First Aid

A revised code of practice on first aid in the workplace came into effect in the ACT on 1 July 2006.

The 24-page code provides updated practical guidance on achieving a safe work environment.

Hazard identification and risk assessment

Chapter 2 of the NSW OHS Regulation 2001 imposes obligations on the employer to identify hazards and access the level of risk associated with those hazards in the workplace.

To assist members with the risk assessment process, NECA has designed a basic hazard identification and risk assessment form specific to the electrical contracting industry.

Generally, it is expected that you will work to Safe Work Method Statements (see SWMSs) for both construction and service work. The HRA identifies the specific requirements for the job and confirms suitability of the SWMS/s. Combined they effectively identify the safe system of work for that task.

The HRA should be prepared prior to commencement and updated or revised as work conditions and safety issues change.

PCBs

Code of Practice for the Safe Handling of Equipment Containing Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB)

NECA also holds a detailed listing of PCB Containing Capacitors that may assist in identification.

Safe Work Method Statements

The NECA Safety Committee has developed the Job Start form and Safe Work Method Statements to provide members the means of fulfilling these obligations. The Job Start form is also included within the suite of Safe Work Method Statemetns (SWMS).
