New Standard for Solar Installations

AS/NZS 5033:2021 is finally here and was published on 19 November 2021.

The existing standard (AS/NZS 5033:2014) will remain available for use for six months (until 18 May 2022). After that date, it will be superseded by AS/NZS 5033:2021 in the state of Victoria.

During this six month period, you may adopt the new standard, but if that’s the case you must adopt the whole standard in its entirety. No mix and match from both versions of the standards. As from 19 May 2022, installation of photovoltaic arrays shall comply with AS/NZS 5033:2021.

NECA will upload the new version in our Technical Knowledge Base (TKB) in the coming weeks. We will notify all NECA members as soon as this has been completed.

The changes include:

  • Rooftop isolator requirements

  • Restricted access changes

  • DC Cable routing and installation requirements

  • Increased Maximum PV Array voltages for domestic installations (up to 1000V d.c.)

  • Documentation and testing requirements and who should receive copies

  • Earthing requirements

  • Additional labelling

  • Changes to d.c. optimisers

  • Installation of Bifacial modules

These are just some of the changes. NECA will be working with our state regulator in explaining the new changes before the 2014 version is superseded.

Look out for NECA webinars and information events in 2022 for more information and advice on these changes.
