Security firm association membership requirment: Office of Fair Trading

Firm membership of an association

All Queensland security firms are required to be a member of an approved security industry association.

The Security Providers Act 1993 empowers approved security industry associations to take on a key role of improving the integrity of the security industry.  This role supplements the compliance activities the Office of Fair Trading conduct.

Becoming a member

The requirement for security firms to be a member of an approved security industry association began on 24 February 2011.  As of this date, existing security firms have 60 days to become a member of an approved association.  Security firms who do not have an active membership with an association by 26 April 2011 will be at risk of having their licence cancelled.

Association membership

Approved security industry associations must have a code of conduct, which your security firm will need to comply with to remain a member.  Associations will also undertake compliance audits of their member security firms at least once every three years.

Associations are required to offer genuine and accessible services relevant to security firms.  Approved security industry associations will be entitled to charge membership fees to cover their costs as well as fees to cover the cost of the audit.  The Office of Fair Trading do not regulate the fee amounts.

Changing associations

If you choose to change associations or your membership is cancelled, your firm must become a member of another approved security industry association within 60 days of the membership cancelation with your former association.

Your must notify the Industry Licensing Unit in writing within seven days of membership cancelation.  You must also notify them in writing within seven days of joining a new approved association.  Please include:

  • your security firm name and licence number
  • the name of your former associaton and the date of your membership cancellation
  • proof of membership with your new approved association, including the date your membership became active
