Industrial Manslaughter laws passed

Despite strong opposition from business and industry groups including NECA, the Queensland Government last week rushed through Parliament laws that create a new offence of “Industrial Manslaughter” in the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the Electrical Safety Act 2002. The new laws can be used by the regulator, where a Company or Executive Officer’s conduct substantially contributes to a workplace death or where an act or omission amounts to gross negligence causing a workplace death.

NECA will continue to monitor how this new law will be implemented and advise members when we know more.
