The electrocution of a dairy farmer in the Victorian town of Yarroweyah last week highlights the dangers of working in, and around electricity, and in the proximity of water, said the CEO of the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA), Mr Suresh Manickam.

Ben Wright, only 21 years of age, tragically lost his life whilst holding a pump in a drainage pit.  Mr Wright’s death follows the electrocution of a 75 year old in Geelong last November, which is currently being investigated by Worksafe Victoria.

“The combination of electricity and water can be a fatal. NECA reminds people to only use electrical components in accordance with their purpose. NECA urges anyone who requires clarification for the uses of electrical components or requiring electrical work to be undertaken to seek out a qualified and licensed electrician”

“In light of this tragic event, NECA again reminds everyone to be vigilant when it comes to electrical safety.  If in doubt, seek advice from a qualified and licensed electrician,” Mr Manickam said.
