Information for Careers Advisors

This information has been compiled to assist in presenting comprehensive options to students to promote a career in electrotechnology.

Over the past 18 months, there has been some impact on Australian employment of apprentices as a result of the Global Financial Crisis where the hiring of apprentices decreased. However, with the more favourable economic outlook, more and more employers are looking to hire apprentices and as such there is now a skills shortage.  NECA agrees with the Australian Government’s Keep Australia Working report, which focuses on an important lesson learned in the early 1990s – that apprenticeship numbers fall during economic slow-downs with long lasting effects that can amplify skill shortages when the economy recovers.

This presents new opportunities for young people looking to enter the electrotechnology sector.

In addition to outlining the major specialisations of the industry and the broad range of training pathways currently available, this site includes a number of case studies on current trade professionals and how they view their careers in the industry.

As the industry develops and changes, more sophisticated technical skills and problem-solving abilities are in demand, making a career in electrotechnology a favourable choice for many young and mature-aged workers who would once have considered vocational options through University the most beneficial pathway to a secure future.
